I’ve just changed my Github username to “emfred-dot-com” (unfortunately the name “emfred” was already taken). When I made my Github account years ago I set my username to “bartlebooth-factorial”, a reference to a main character from George Perec’s wonderful novel “La Vie mode d’emploi” (translated by the excellent David Bellos as “Life: A User’s Manual”). Aside from being annoying to type out, this name doesn’t reflect the Emfred brand1 that I’ve built, so I decided to change it to one that clearly did. Following this change, I’ve updated all documentation on this website which referenced my old Github username to use the new one.
I’m planning to start making contributions to significant open-source projects soon, in order to boost my credibility as a software developer. Having the commits I make labeled under “emfred-dot-com” instead of the old name will be great, as the work I do can hopefully get me some recognition and opportunities for paying work.

[1]: The term “brand” makes me laugh, but I suppose it’s accurate at this point: almost all of my important projects over the last year have been billed under this name, as have the services I offer. It’s funny to remember that I was originally unhappy with the name “emfred” since I felt like it sounded awkward, but here I am years later still using it, so I suppose it worked out well enough. ↩︎
